2011 was the second worst year on record for insured losses arising from catastrophe events, with claims in excess of $100 billion. Against the backdrop the syndicate delivered a strong and positive result with a claims ratio of 52.8% and a combined ratio of 98.6%.
The syndicate achieved its key milestone of passing the profitability in its second full year of trading, despite the expense strain associated with the establishment of a new business, the costs of its comprehensive reinsurance programme and the investment costs of developing a W. R. Berkley Lloyd’s Managing Agency.
